Classic Green Bean Casserole

Classic green bean casserole combines cut green beans and creamy mushroom sauce in a 1 1/2-quart baking dish. It bakes until hot and bubbling, then gets a crispy French-fried onion topping that turns golden brown in the oven.

Ingredients

  • 2 can (14.5 oz) cut green beans drained
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 0.75 cup milk
  • 0.125 tsp black pepper
  • 1.33 cup French-fried onions divided

Equipment

  • 1 1 1/2-quart baking dish

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Grease a 1 1/2-quart baking dish.
  3. In a medium bowl, stir together the soup, milk, and pepper.
  4. Fold in the green beans and 2/3 cup of the French-fried onions.
  5. Spread the mixture in the prepared dish.
  6. Bake uncovered for 25 minutes, until hot and bubbling.
  7. Sprinkle the remaining 2/3 cup French-fried onions over the top.
  8. Bake for 5 minutes, until the onions are golden brown.
  9. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For the best texture, add the remaining onions only for the final 5 minutes of baking. Refrigerate leftovers for 3–4 days; freezing is not recommended because the creamy sauce and onion topping can lose their texture. For a dairy-free version, use dairy-free cream of mushroom soup and unsweetened plant milk.
